End of Expression?

When Written: April 2013

One of my favourite development tools, particularly for writing CSS is Microsoft Expression for Web, so I was saddened the other day to see that Microsoft have stopped development and support of this and most of the other products in the Expression suite (http://www.microsoft.com/expression/eng ) . Currently these are all being offered as free downloads and are a worthwhile use of your disc space.

The lynch pin of the Expression suite was always Blend which is the XMAL designer for Silverlight and mobile development. This has now been incorporated into Visual Studio which is probably the correct place for it to be. Microsoft had spent a lot of time trying to build a competitor to Dreamweaver and to getting designers on board with their extensive network of developers, the series of MIX conferences, which were always inspiring are over, and it seems that Microsoft is retreating back to its traditional strengths within the developer community.

It’s the end of the line for the rather good Microsoft Expressions Suite
