Access updates

When Written: July 2006

Often with clients I find that they like to maintain their company data with Microsoft Access. However their web server will be running something like MySQL which is much better suited to handling the number of requests that might occur out on the web rather than using Access which really should be considered a desktop database, albeit a very flexible one.

So there is a need in such situations to syncronise the office-based access database with the MySQL  data on the web server. Whilst many of us might ‘roll our own’ solution, one ready made one was brought to my attention by Richard Palmer of Blackbird Solutions. This product is called Access2MySQL Sync (http://www.data-conversions.net/index.php) and it does what it ‘says on the tin’ , there are evaluation versions on their web site so you can try before you buy. The product has a scheduler package as well so you can set up time schedules to synchronise your data automatically.
